UAE’s Trade Fair System and Its Significance for Italy

IN TODAY’S interconnected global economy, fostering international trade relations and collaboration among nations is imperative. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), has emerged as a key player in this landscape due to its rapid economic growth and strategic geographic location bridging East and West. The exhibitions held in various cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, attract a significant attention from global industry leaders, providing a dynamic platform for business promotion, networking, and knowledge exchange.

For Italian enterprises, these events serve as a gateway to tap into the thriving Middle Eastern markets. Italian industries, known for their excellence in fashion, design, luxury goods, machinery, and technology, leverage these platforms to showcase their premium offerings. This exposure not only amplifies Italy’s export figures but also enhances the country’s reputation for quality craftsmanship and innovation. Moreover, the UAE’s trade fair ecosystem fosters valuable opportunities for Italian companies to engage in in critical business interactions, both B2B (business-to-business) and B2G (business-to-government).

These engagements provide collaborations between Italian businesses and local entities, paving the way for new joint ventures and exploring investment opportunities. Over recent years, the commercial ties between Italy and the UAE have in fact exhibited substantial growth and importance. Indeed, Italy stands as one of the key European trade partners of the UAE: over the past 25 years, the United Arab Emirates experienced an annualized export growth of 18.9% to Italy, reaching $5.23 billion (USD) in 2020 from $68.9 million (USD) in 1995, while Italy’s exports to the United Arab Emirates saw a 4.15% annualized growth during the same period, increasing from $1.62 billion (USD) in 1995 to $4.48 billion (USD) in 2020, with major exports consisting of Jewellery, Valves, and Other Furniture. [1-2] Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, the bilateral trade surpassed 10 billion (USD) in 2021. [3]

Conversely, the UAE also stands as a crucial partner for Italy across various domains, encompassing political dialogues addressing bilateral issues and regional security matters. Culturally, the inauguration of the first Italian Cultural Institute in the Gulf region at Abu Dhabi in 2019 epitomises these cultural ties. Moreover, the scientific cooperation benefits from the presence of numerous Italian researchers in the UAE.
The UAE represents both the primary supplier and market outlet in the MENA region, as stated by the Economic Observatory. Italy’s presence in the country is substantial, with over 600 Italian enterprises, comprising both large corporations and SMEs, operating predominantly in sectors such as construction (including entities like Italferr, Itinera, Mapei, Rimond Cimolai, Rizzani de Eccher, We Build), energy (Ansaldo, ENI, Maire Tecnimont, Saipem, SNAM, Technip, Tenaris), consumer goods (FCA, Luxottica, Maserati, Technogym), security/defence (Elettronica, Fincantieri, Leonardo), banking/insurance (Banca Intesa Sanpaolo, Unicredit, SACE), and aerospace (Telespazio). The UAE’s status as a global business hub offers an advantageous backdrop for Italian start-ups and SMEs seeking international expansion. The participation in these trade fairs enables them to gain exposure, secure partnerships, and access potential investors and clients in a region characterised by its affluence and a burgeoning consumer market.
In this framework, trade fairs play a vital role to promote the ‘Made in Italy’ brand and reinforce Italy’s prestige and brand reputation on a global scale. Thus, Italy’s active involvement in the UAE trade fair system not only supports bilateral economic development but also serves as a pivotal opportunity for international trade expansion and diversification.
